In the attempt to keep things fresh after 11 seasons, American Idol
is making even more changes. Usually a live audience isn't brought into
play before the judges have picked the top 20. This year, however, the
top 40 are performing at the Mirage in Las Vegas
in front of a live audience. Last night, half of the remaining girls
performed, after which the judges narrowed the group down from 10 to 5.
Tonight, the same thing with happen with 10 of the guys.
There was an obvious division in this group with about half the
girls being superstars and the other half being...let's call them
excellent karaoke singers. This set up allowed for very few surprises.
The girls who outdid themselves included Kree, who has an effortless
quality to her performances; Angela, who stunned the judges in Hollywood with her amazing original song; and Amber, who had a makeover after being eliminated in Vegas last season.
A couple of the girls really bombed, and it makes you wonder how
they even managed to get this far in the competition, especially with
how many talented female singers there were this season. Country singer
Jenny Beth was just okay; Brandy failed to deliver an emotional
connection that was consistent with the song lyrics; Shubha's rendition
of "Born This Way"
was all over the place; and Kamaria - by far the worst - sang in the
wrong pitch for the entire song. These 4 stood no chance.
The only real surprise this episode was the elimination of
Isabelle, who gave a stunning vocal performance that was better than
two of the girls who were kept - Tenna and Adriana. But perhaps it
sounds different live than it does at home.
These are the girls who made it into the top 20:
- Kree Harrison
- Angela Miller
- Tenna Torres
- Adriana Latonia
- Amber Holcomb
Tonight, the boys perform. Check back tomorrow for an update to our review.
