Gossip & Gists: 48-Hours Into the Nigeria Rap Industry

Kendrick Lamar has totally improved our once botched Rap Industry or should be improving now…

This is The Truth……

Though we have forgiven Ice Prince for always rhyming ‘London’ with ‘Condomn’ (did it thrice), we have forgiven those that did punchlines with H-Factor, there is a Hip-hop revolt where Nigerian Rappers now realize lyrics matter even when featured by Terry G or Timaya…

Last week Ovie of NJO did a Kendrick on the industry when he released ‘Top 10 Most Gifted Rap list’, though I see nothing wrong with the people on it, just their placings that should be my concern a little, but if you get what ‘Gifted’ means, you will have little issue with the list.

The fear of Modenine’s pedigree rather than credit once again played a part in his securing of the #1 spot. A rapper whose album couldn’t out-sell a Burna Boy single? (That discussion is for another day).

Before now, half the Nigerian Rappers think doing a song with Wizkid, tatoo your body and have friends in the industry makes you a star, well that’s just a complex if ‘three-quater’ of the shows in Nigeria you’re not invited.

Now, back to the matter at hand...

The list sparked Godwon (a rapper all of twitter don’t know excluding some small Cliques) angry and pissed, he started analyzing ‘Sinzu and M.I’s’ placement on it. Well trust 'Saucekid’, he entered a studio, while Godwon has already released a track (we all streamed and half didn't download) for Sinzu. Early today, Sinzu’s producer already tweeted, promising us a ‘Career Ending Track’ but considering Godwon’s status, many people asked ‘what career is he actually ending?’

The suprise of all that happened was when a similarly unknown act ‘Rukus’ dropped a diss track. Sounded funny to me considering he actually dissed The Top Cats, I mean Modo, M.I, Naeto-C, Ice Prince?? Who does that? But considering Iceberg Slim’s successfully dissed and Sis’d M.I… Why not? And, Ice Prince tweeted him "...Sucker Punch in the Process!.. Guarantee-ing Him If he Made 10tweets With his Name He’ll Get An NEA nomination.. LOL!!!"

As all these chaos unfolds, Hip-hop lovers in the country dare to ask... ‘Will this improve Hip-hop?’, 'Why didn't they mention Yung6ix, isn’t he relevant?’, 'Will M.I. ever enter the studio again?'

But the truth is #48HoursIntoNaijaRapIndustry has never been more entertaining!

Gossip & Gists: "I Am The Best Rapper In Nigeria’ , Yung6ix Declares

Last year, M.I crowned Yung6ix as the rap ‘King of the South’, a year later, the young yet-to-debut rapper is claiming to be better than the Choc Boy and every other rapper in Nigeria…

Yung6ix

Yung6ix, a talented budding MC declared his new self acclaimed status on Twitter yesterday (August 31, 2013); ‘I am the Best Rapper in Nigeria , if you have an opposing Opinion , now is the Best time to keep it to yourself #Controlstateofmind‘.

Obviously inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s recent declaration as being the ‘King of New York‘ and all the controversy it’s brought, Yung6ix is probably looking to spin some contention around himself.

Earlier this year, he took a swipe at a Benin-based rapper Cyrus tha Virus after the latter contested his (Yung6ix) claim to being the rap ‘King of the South’.
Yung6ix is signed to Storm 360. He says he will be releasing his debut album in 2013.
